Rocks

In this series of pieces I’m working with the block of wax as it was a precious stone or a gem from its original state.

When a gem can break into flat faces (in one or more directions), we speak of exfoliation. This depends on the cohesive forces between the atoms, on their reticular structure. The exfoliation can be perfect or imperfect depending on how easily the stone breaks.

When I carve the wax I’m thinking about those facets as elements of construction; searching for imperfection and asymmetry as a total piece.

And even for double pieces like earrings, I like the idea each earring is unique, breaking with the common convention that they need to be the same and perfectly symmetric.
